Hello, New Guy... already needs help.

    Hey there guys,

Long time tent dweller here who enjoys fly fishing and camping. I have admired yall from a far and finally decided to give this thing a try. (Love of Linville Gorge led me to Shug's videos) I ordered a Grand Trunk ultralight because of the price and to see if I like it before diving in deeper. I also ordered some Eno straps and I realize those are not all that popular, bit I was hoping it would be enought to get my feet wet.

First I thought I would try the ropes system that came with the GT. First problem, no system came with the hammock! Before I realized this I stupidly untied the S hook and short chord looking for more and it came completely undone. Yikes!

I don't have time to put any money or effort in a better system and I realize they're out there but can anyone advise what knot to use or how to retie? I'm hoping to hit the NC moutnains this weekend and convince my son-inlaw there are alternatives to tents.

Thanks in advance, sorry to be so needy so early.

Welcome aboard wareagle. Can't help with this as I'm a DIY'er but someone will be along shortly.

    hey from high point!

i'm not familiar w/ GT but i'll take a stab at it.
take a length of straitened coat hanger (be Sure there are no sharp edges or points that might snag the fabric).
retie your rope into a loop using a double fisherman's knot. ( assuming you have about a 14" length )

attach the end of some twine or string (long enough to go thru the sewn channel plus enough to grab and pull ) to the coat hanger w/ tape and feed it thru the channel.
tie the twine or string the loop and slowly gather the hammock channel over the rope loop. make sure you don't allow the loop to be pulled completely into the channel.
when you have the channel scrunched over the loop, pass one end of the loop the other end and hook the "s" thru the loop formed in the rope so that it will not come back out of the channel.
    repeat for the other end.

If you can't use that stock rope find yourself something comparable at Walmart or HomeDepot. A double fisherman's knot previously mentioned will allow you to feed that continuous loop through your end channel and larkshead it on. From there you could use the hooks that came with it or use some sturdy carabiners.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. Shout out to High Point! To help simplify things (for my pea brain), the hook is still well tied on one end. If if I feed it through what type of knot can I tie on the other loose end to secure?

Can I do away with the chord entirely and just put caribiners through the channels? (for one trip, temporarily)

i think you should tie the rope to it's self with a double fisherman's knot
is the hook tied onto one end of the rope? if so with what knot?
