    ALARUCK Oct 8-9, 2011

Just bringing this one to it's own thread if we have a group Hammocking event there during ALARUCK. Here is the info Jedbear posted in the other thread:

I am in Conecuh National Forest almost every weekend. A gathering of hikers
and campers will take place at Open Pond in CNF early October. I will most
likely be "hanging". The event will be the first ever AlaRuck hosted by The
Alabama Hiking Trail Society, www.hikealabama.org. Everyone is invited and
the only cost is the Forest Service camp fee, $6.00 per tent site. This would be a great to meet some of the folks who share your passion for the outdoors. More information can be found at the above AHTS website.

I have it set on my calendar. This far out I can't say I am 100% yet, but I plan on it. We may have to camp at on of the other campgrounds withing a short hike to have enough trees to hang from. The campgrounds there are obviously made for tents and RV camping. But there are large openings with lots of long needle pine trees that are great for hanging from. Most of the area has been control burned this last spring so we may have good open areas for hammocks.

Sure wish that I were not going to be on a trip at this time. I would love to attend. I grew up nearby and fished Open Pond, Gum Pond and Blue Lake with dad many times. My wife's mother lived within 10 minutes of Open Pond. As a teenager I helped roof the main building of the Methodist camp at Blue Lake. I hope everyone have a great time and maybe I'll see you next year.

I was hoping one would be planned for McDill point on the Talladega Mtns, near Cheaha mtn this fall. I would be there without a doubt.

Mandydawn and myself were looking at setting up a group hang around the Turnipseed Camp or possibly near the creek at the Cheaha Shelter this fall. May try to talk her into a mid-Sept date. Don't forget to check out the Meriwether Lewis Hang in TN the weekend after yours, great food and a great group of folks make that one.

I can't make it that weekend. I already have locked up the rest of October on my schedule. Sad that I am looking at February for open dates for stuff.

I would shoot for the ridge, that is where I like to camp. Turnipseed is good for those who may not want to hike much. I was thinking parking at the Cave creek trail parking area just north of Cheaha SP and hiking the Pinhoti connector that is really close, then south to McDill. But I will go where ever you have it. But will be visiting the ridge without a doubt. One big pus on Turnipseed, plenty of water for use. There will be none at McDill unless we bring it along.

Back to Conecuh, we will see what kind of crowd we stir here and plan the site accordingly.
