    Over compressing down quilts?

I just picked up a shiny new summer burrow top quilt from HG, and I was wondering. I know that the instructions say not to store it compressed for long periods of time, but even in the stuff sack it comes with you can squeeze it down a lot. Will compressing this quilt further than the stuff sack already does (for short periods of time) damage this quilt?

Ideally you don't want to compress it allot as it takes longer to puff it back up again but having said that most of the time even after a long period of time they will puff back up with some coaxing in a dryer with tennis balls. Some folks just put their quilts loose in their packs filling up the spaces .

I wouldn't go not compressing it beyond the original stuff sack.

Great piece of gear ya got their, I love my summer burrow. As for compressing the burrow, The more compressed it is the longer it will probably take to loft up. When I pack my quilts in my pack, I just stuff them in and they fill up any dead space I have in the pack. If my quilts do go into a dedicated stuff sack I pack them pretty loosely As for storing them I just store them in those huge tupper wear bins and keep the top off. As for stuffing them as small as they can be stuffed for a short period of time (from morning to night while hiking lets say) will it damage them, some may say yes other may so no I say I don't think so (but I am no expert) as long as your storing them un compressed for long periods of time while the quilts are not in use. But personally I try to compress my down as little as possible all the time.

    YMMV

that's the beauty of the 900 fill. the resiliency it has (meaning it relofts SO fast) compared to lesser downs. i wouldn't sweat that at all. when you take it out of your pack at camp give it a few good shakes.

as other said, i wouldn't smash it down as small as possibly, but don't be afraid to pack it.

    of course, store unstuffed...

    enjoy

I like to use over-sized stuff sacks for all my down stuff. I use a homemade spinnaker sack for the burrow and use the sack that came with the burrow for my underquilt. I store them in a large plastic trunk at home (after letting them air out and get out any moisture). I have a couple of down sleeping bags that are quite old and they still have nearly all their original loft.

The biggest reason I got down insulation was due to it's compressibility. I put my down products in compressible stuff sacks in order to save pack room. I've never had any issues with them lofting back up. When in storage they hang on a wall fully lofted.
