    Limits of 1.6 oz fabric

Curious what the DIY pros think is a reasonable weight limit for 1.6 oz fabric. Seems like 1.9 is usually considered pretty solid for 300 lbs or so. Would 1.6 be solid for 240? Stretchy?

BTW - this is a disease. I have 5 hammocks of various size and shapes, but none are made by me so for some reason I'm looking into making one. I was happy with one until I started hanging around this place. Bad influences !

Well, I'm not a DIY guru or anything like it. I've been lurking around here for almost a year now. You are right it certainly has an addictive property to it. It's like the quest for the perfect hang; chasing the dragon. But wait a second, you are about to cross over a threshold from user to manufacturer. Is your habbit so hard to maintain that you must start making your own to keep the fix going? Before you know it you'll have your own cottage shop that consumes every free minute you've got. Then, the wife is complaining cause you spend more time making & hanging hammocks than you do with her. You start contemplating quiting your day job to run the cottage shop full time so you can make time for your wife & kids. Just like that you are so deeply immersed in the lifestyle that death is your only way out. Becareful, it's a slippery slope.

As for the 1.6oz fabric... Yeah should be fine for 240lbs. I've ready on here that 300lbs. Is pretty much the point of failure for 1.1oz/sq.yd. 30D Ripstop nylon hammocks. For more support, less stretch, & softer feel I would recommend Supplex/Taslan nylon; though it can be hard to find in the weight & color you maybe looking for.

Also, this should maybe be in the fabrics sub-forum under DIY, but I'm not a mod either.

Curt, I've been experimenting with some polyester suit lining @ 1.37oz/sy and 235 lbs. It's more than adequate for my weight but doesn't lay well. I've tried every whipped fold and every channeled gather looking for that sweet spot. The next step is to try it in the trees and not on my indoor stand to try different sags. I'm using a single line suspension with it and may need to try seperate whoopies and ridgeline. The fabric and SLS are under a pound, I've got to make this work! Welcome to DIY. Ain't this fun?

I'm sorry, but when you said polyester suit lining, it reminded me of '70's polyester "leisure suits" .

You all are joking but I'd totally pimp that suit at the bar on St Patti's day.

Who's joking? You had to be there, then.

Sadly, it's NOT a joke! .... Well, actually I guess it was - but it wasn't meant to be, back then
