Pad under hammock?

Will there be the same thermal benefit with a pad on the outside of the hammock, IE: between the hammock and the underquilt?

I tried a pad for the first time last night and it wasn't the best. It's a three quarter inflatable.

It would give the same thermal effects, if you can keep it snug against the outside of the hammock. Inside, trapped between you and the hammock, it has no choice. I have no idea how you will be able to attach/suspend it on the outside without having big airgaps.

well the hennessy underpad is OCF and it works well with the silnylon undercover to trap air and heat in there. but ive slept with just the underpad before with a 50 degree bag on top to about 60 or so.

no... it will degrade the temp rating of the UQ due to the fact that the UQ works best when it is right against your body ... this is how it collects heat ...
also the pad will weigh down the UQ so you will have air gaps

if you plan to use a pad with a UQ it works best in between layers of a hammock or inside the hammock
as for the HH SS pad it's a different beast from a inflatable pad or a blue pad...

I'm not sure if I intend to use the two together, but just picked two pads up on clearance at Academy for $17.

What would be the difference between the pad being inbetween layers of hammock and outside the hammock as far as the UQ drawing heat?

I think I could get the UQ snug enough to hold a partial deflated pad against me.

It's really one or the other, imho. Like GLP said, the uq does best against your body. Adding a pad just interrupts that heat transfer. For me a pad just gives me the option of going to ground.

For inflatables, I let a bunch of air out, maybe less than half. That way it conforms to the bends of your body better. It takes some playing to find the "right" amount of air. Its one of those personal things again. Try setting the pad in place with the valve exposed and hop in the hammock. Then let out some air.

That's what I was thinking G. I woke up last night with the valve planted firmly in my face which is what started me thinking about having the pad on the outside of the hammock.

I would just use my Gar-quilt but it's too hot right now.

would it help any if the pad were on the topside of the hammock layer instead of under the hammock, maybe with a 2nd layer over it to hold it in place. Or would this still interfere with the UQ working properly?
