Plans don't look too bad, I can lay them out in CADD and pretty them up if you'd like

Thanks for the reply Jazilla - the plans here are labelled according to ridge line length - so the one I tried was essentially a hammock with 12' body that was reduced to 10' ridge line by the time sag and the footbox are taken into account.

I would definitely agree that bigger isn't better in this scenario - because it is really difficult to reach the shelf above you - that is why I've cut it back to the 8' ridge line version. I'll let you know how it goes when I finish sewing it up tonight.

Holy BAH (big a** hammock) Batman I now see the problem. You got exactly the right results with the size you chose. I am a whooping 5'8 and the 11' i made did exactly the same. The first one I made (still my favorite) was 9 1/2' and it was perfect. It was sadly a gift to my brother.

So now hack up the 12 footer and try again. Good thing is now you got one under your belt and won't have trouble with the second.

Just a little tip, if you sew in some grosgrain loops as you sew your seem you can use those as UQ supports later if you should need. I added this to my bridges and it helps to have and sucks when you don't.

thanks for all the help everyone - I cut it back to the shorter model and it's really good. A couple of things I would consider changing/adding for next time:

    - use noseeum netting for the strip of fabric that attaches to the zipper: I think this would allow me to get a better view out of the hammock and would be structurally sound as it is not a load bearing part of the hammock

    - sew velcro loops into the grosgrain between the tie out points to neaten the tie outs when not in use.

    - i'd probably consider using roll hems all around too to reduce weight (rather than finishing with grosgrain).

So I layed out these plans (the 8 ft model) in CADD at work and will be making a large, to scale, roll plot to use as a template. I will look into how much it would be to copy the plot if anyone is interested in one...

Are you going to make a paper copy to put together first. I have seen the mini models would be cool to see a full scale one.

I'm 5'8 I made mine 10' and it kinda does difficult to reach the shelf. I would go with 8' or 9' version if I were to build another one.

definitely stick with the 8'. I think the larger versions don't work so well, and the 8' will definitely be long enough for you

Am 5'5'', built a 8' model -- and yes, it is very difficult to reach the shelf.
