Don't use permethrin on your skin! That one is for your clothes. Once dried, it is harmless to your skin.

For direct application to skin, try Picaridin. Works effectively and doesn't have any of the drawbacks (ruined gear, death, etc) that DEET has.

deet will also eat the finish off your fishing rods,,your lures,,and probably eat monfiliment line as well.. It will take the finish off wood finish of your guns too. There are lots of things you have to be careful with using deet.

DEET is a formidable solvent for sure. It makes me itch worse than the bites, so I only use it when I have to, and even then only spray it on my clothes and hat.

There are as many opinions on how to keep away skeeters as there are "cures" for poison ivy. Met someone who said Bounce dryer sheets confuses them enough so they won't land. He said one sheet in a belt loop and one on his pack. I am skeptical--especially when they are out in full force.

I've read a few posts on this subject lately. I have not heard anyone mention a Thermacell. I love mine. I have it with me on my kayak. We normally launch before daybreak and the mosquitos around the mangroves are horrible! Turn on the Thermacell and in a few minutes, no more skeeters. It is the best thing I have found for them.

If its use is as a confusant then using it is also confusing because we put something on our skin that can eat away platic among other things. Go figure.

If stuff with DEET gets on me anywhere near my neck or above, my lips go numb!

I've had good success with the geraniol based stuff from the BugBand people.

They even make a product to spread around on the ground to repel bugs. I used it at Summer Camp this past summer around my area, but don't know if it made a difference as there were not many bugs there.

+1 - Had a good experiance this past Summer with it. A little on the heavy side, but good if you need to stay in one place with not too much wind.
