Visiting Golden, Colorado 23-26 Oct, 2011

    Hi all,

I am headed to Golden, Co for a class at the Colorado School of Mines on 23 Oct for a few days. What are some good places to visit (trails and such) in the late afternoon/evening? Are there any mom/pop camping stores to visit? I hate staying in the hotel room when I am traveling so any suggestions would be very helpful. I was stationed at Lowry (Denver) back in the late '80s, early 90s so I am sure it has changed a little since that time.

Thanks for any help you can give,

    Eric

    yep

BentGate on main street in Golden. They have a nice web site.

Check the American Mountaineering Center for activities.

Bring you climbing gear for the basalt cliffs above Golden on North Table Mountain.

There are many Jefferson County Open space hiking trails very close to Golden.

Good suggestions by Food - also, check out REI store on Wadsworth Ave.... not too far from Golden, in Lakewood/Englewood area.

Not familiar with trails in Golden, but I am pretty sure that Golden Colorado is home to the Coors Brewery, so perhaps after hitting up some trails you could go to a brewery tour to finish off your trip to Golden with a frosty beverage or two.

Thanks all for the advice.....I see hitting the REI store then a nice open trail hike and I am sure I will be thirsty/dehydrated so I will regrettably HAVE to hit the brewery...such a bad trip in the making

I am not sure about hiking shops but if I make it to Golden, I would visit Spyderco.

I'd skip Coors and checkout The Golden City Brewery.

    Trails I'd recommend.
    Apex, Lair O the Bear,

Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Fraser Meadows might be in peak aspen color.

Id have to agree with outand back and say skip coors. i thought it was going to be better than it was.

the rei flagship in downtown denver is worth heading to. its a bit bigger than the one on wads. there is a smaller store across the street that im brainfarting on, but it also has hiking/climbing/camping gear.

lair o the bear should be pretty right about now with the leaves changing. red rocks is another fun place to hike around. lookout mountain is a good spot to head up to that gives you a great view of golden from above. i havent gotten out as much as i would like since im working too much but everyone else should have some other good spots to check out. either way, its always fun out here, unless you are driving
Tucker: So I suppose if you are helping us you arent as mean as I thought...
Tex: I wouldnt say Im mean, I just get hired to do mean things.
    Tucker: But you like it.
Tex: Well I think its important to enjoy what you do.

LOL Lowry is gone of course. (Stapleton is too.( It's housing and shopping now days! Just had to laugh at that, changed indeed.

I have no other suggestions, everyone's done a good job.
But I have to say Spyderco is a good suggestion. On hiway 93 toward Boulder, on the left, look for Spyderco way, before you leave civilization.
And the flagship REI down town Denver is cool.

head a few miles north to Boulder and do the Mesa trail...my favorite trial in the area. I start at NCAR and go South as far as you want to go (7 miles one way). Gorgeous views, great hike.
