    WTB: External Frame Backpack

My GF needs a bigger pack for us to do some overnight treks. She has always expressed how she loves the external design as opposed to the modern internals. So that is what I am looking for!

I am even interested in older style external frames. If the "pack" part is in poor condition I can restore the frame and make new packs to attach to it.

Send me a PM if you have anything. I am trying to keep it on the cheap.

    Thanks!

Kelty, Mountainsmith, Jansport, and a few others still make external frame packs (mostly for youth). Depending on your girlfriend's height one of these modern ones might be the way to go. Check REI, Campmor, etc.

I actually prefer the way an external pack carries but in my quest to get my load lighter and lighter they have a hard time competing in the weight department. My Osprey is almost as comfortable and a few pounds lighter than my old Kelty.

As a last resort....check Craiglslist or Goodwill. There's almost always someone dumping some old gear out of the back of a garage.

    zukiguy,

An option to lighten up an external frame pack is to remove the pack, load up your equipment in a dry bag, and lash the dry bag to the frame. This reduces the weight considerably and leaves plenty of room to lash other gear/bags as needed to the frame.

I have a 33 year old Kelty Yukon frame pack. I bought it in Alaska in '78. Used it 3 or 4 times while I lived there, carried weights most sane people wouldn't consider these days. Later, I used it for hunting in Colorado. I once took the pack off and strapped an elk quarter onto it. Very functional. I doubt you want to pay much. You can get new ones for around $100. Not sure if they are the same as they were 30+ years ago. I don't think I would sell it cheap enough to where you would save a lot of money over a new one.

Speaking of, just ordered a Jansport Carson,,,,,something like $87 including shipping. Likewise setting up a sheila for in our case a much colder hang than her Ohm can carry for.
When I started looking at the weights of the much bigger internals they are seem to run 4.5-over 6 pounds and usually with huge price tags (Kelty Red Cloud 110 excluded)....the Red Cloud just mentioned gets around 6600 cubes---nice BUT the Jansport at less dollars hits almost 5000 cubes but it can accept a large eVent stuff sack below and maybe on top too for the large bulky down goodness items.
Well that was how I rationalized the choice.

    These are 89 bucks here.
They carry comfortable and will hold more than you'd ever want to carry. I find mine more comfortable (and flexible) than the metal frames.

I find them at garage sales for $5-$10 all the time. I buy them and donate them to local boy scout troops who do not have the means to buy equipment themselves. So, check out garage sales.

4600 without the rucksack being extended or the front pocket. It dresses out more like 5500 and has enough MOLLE webbing and straps to attach any number of other packs beyond the 5500.

I'll put the MOLLE demo on my list, I may even wear it.
