    Lightbulb Cheap, Lightweight Summer UQ

I am looking to make a cheap, lightweight underquilt for use in the summer and possibly even early fall/late spring use(in SC). My idea was to layer some 1.1 sil-nylon outside of a layer of IX which would be outside a layer of fleece. I thought that the fleece would absorb any condensation that formed without decreasing the warmth much and the IX would windproof the fleece and add extra insulation. Does this seem to make sense to everyone else? When constructing the quilt would I be fine just sewing together the edges of the quilt or should I sew any seams across the middle to keep the layers from shifting any? Thanks

    Hello from the Upstate.

The sil should not be needed if you have a good tarp. 1.1 works very well, is cheaper and lighter weight.
I've considered going with 3yrds of 1.1 and some IX for a DIY summer UQ, but if the weight is going to be over 12oz, I'd have to go with something else (I like my gear lightweight).

Whatever you decide, best of luck.

If you browse through the DIY section, you should be able to find a few IX UQs that meet your requirements. The fleece, I would think, would be heaveir and about the same cost as buying enough IX for a second layer.

why not get some 1.1 ripstop and some Climashield 2.5oz .... that would make a nice UQ for temps about 40F

if you want to stick with the IX 2 layers following the instuctions Scott has in the DIY section
i made one with a layer if 1.1 ripstop as a shell and 2 layers of IX should works nice for summer weather (tested it in the basement at 60F)
lots of members have had good luck with 3 layers of IX... check the thread out lots of great info

i think the fleece would be a little overkill and add too much weight JMO
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Ok some good advice. Thanks guys. I think you are right about the fleece, i should be fine without it... SC is hot enough in the summer... all I really need for the summer is to cut the wind, something the IX should be perfect for. Plus the insulative properties of the IX will help in the shoulder seasons. I am thinking of going with IX instead of Climashield for a more bombproof quilt that should still be lightweight. The only thing I dont understand with the IX quilts is the darts. How do I make/use those? Also, wouldn't an IX only quilt cause quite a bit of condensation during SC's humid summers since it acts as a vapor barrier?

You could always go with down. I made a darted, baffeld down UQ good down to 30F for less than $100. So a 40F down UQ should be possible for ~$80 and weigh in at around 13oz.
Heck, I may make one like this thinking about it. With the right materials (read thick wallet (read not currently me)), one could get under 10oz for a summer UQ.

Ok down does seem like it would be a good idea, however I'm not quite sure where to get the down from. Thru-Hiker has it but at $10 and ounce the price starts to add up. Where would be the best place to purchase some good quality 800+fill down?

Thru Hiker is who I was thinking of when I priced the UQ above. Wilderness Logics has 800+ fill for $6.25/oz. I would go with the 900+ fill though. I used the WL stuff, but I prefer the Thru Hiker down. Its lighter weight and easier to compress. 1 bag (3oz) of the 900+ should be enough to get you to 50F. Add a bag (1oz) of 800+ to get you to ~45F.
    If you use 3yrds of 1.1 @ $7.50/yrd, a yard of nanoseeum netting @ $6, 30' of shock cord (though you shouldn't need all of it, it's better to have a little extra) @ $.25/ft, and 3 cord locks @ $.25/ cord lock. You're done with $73.50 w/o SH for a 3/4 45F UQ.

Thanks for the idea. It sounds like a great plan... just have to get some cash first. I think Ill just get 2 of the 3oz bags of 900+fill to have some extra for various projects. I'm getting the urge to make a down beanie as well... the DIY bug has bitten me.
