    Hi from Scotland

Hi, I'm a newbie looking at getting a hammock having spent many years on the ground. However, I am getting really confused by the options and the really poor images on the websites. I understand underquilts completely, top quilts - what do you lie on, I tend to sleep in not alot and need ventilation. I've seen a couple of hammocks but don't really like any of them. My easiest option would be to be able to look at all the options physically, but where I live it's not really an option - be looking at a 300 to 400 mile drive each way.
Anyway, I expect I'll be asking plenty of daft questions so please be gentle with me initially

Hi MW - welcome to the forum

With a top quilt you're just lying on the hammock fabric, the under quilt keeps you warm from below and the TQ on top.

    hi there MW

I probably have more options than I ought to at this stage....

hammocks - WBBB; BMBH and DD frontline,
quilts - JRB top and under-quilts; snugpak undrquilt and another down 'UK cottage industry' one
tarps - DD; OES Maccat Delux; WB superfly, true north big tarp.

In my defence, I canoe camp mainly and so weight isn't such an issue, and I also take one or other (maybe both this year) of the kids along, so I've been gearing up for 3 - that's my excuse anyway!

but, anyway, I'm in Inverness, so not so far away and if you'd like, at some date that suits, we could maybe meet up near some trees (Culbin?) so you could see some of this stuff in real life?

    cheers

    D

Welcome aboard. Try and take up the offer to check out the stuff. Once you see it all set-up, it will be much clearer.

Welcome to the fun. Hammock hanging is far superior to laying on the cold hard ground. There is a ton of information here and sorting through it all just starting out can be a bit overwhelming just starting out. Might I suggest you make a DIY hammock to get your feet wet so to speak.
Scotland is beautiful country I spent thre weeks in Kinloss April - May of this year. Loved every second of it!

Thanks for the responses guys, I'll take you up on that offer at some point donmacn if you don't mind, I live about 5 mins from Culbin. Currently sat on a rollercoaster in the middle of the North Sea and I have no idea when I'm getting off.
