    Ultralight Hammock for Newbie

I am thinking about ditching my tent (BA Seedhouse SL1) and the hard ground and trying a hammock. I tried napping in a friends ENO Doublenest this weekend and really liked it.

I am looking for suggestions for a hammock set up lighter (or at least as light as) than my tent (2lbs 6oz). I am 6'-0" 160lbs and am looking at the ENO Pronest (54"x96" 13oz), ENO ProFly Sil (7'-2" x 9'-6" 13oz) and ENO Slap Strap Micro (4.5oz) for a total weight of 30.5oz but want to make sure that the hammock will be big enough (to use as a seat too) and the tarp will be big enough to keep me dry. Is there anything else you would suggest? I am open to anything but a HH (don't like the "birth canal" entry) but a Made in the USA hammock is a plus.

    Thanks.

eno's hammocks are not made in the usa.

the pronest is kinda small. bigger hammock will be more comfy although i'm sure it's still big enough for chair use.

    Welcome to the forum, Mocs.

Just as WBG says, the ENO (and all other similar HAAB style hammocks - including TTTM, TrekLight, etc) are made in Bali. Also, the ENO straps are made of nylon, which stretches, and is less than ideal.

For a U.S. made hammock, have you considered a Speer? Pair it with either one of the Speer tarps or a MacCat, and it would make a great lightweight U.S.-made setup.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have been looking at the Speer website and wish he had some better pictures to look at, I can't tell exactly how everything is put together, is the bug netting removable?

    Those MacCat tarps look great.

Yes, the bug net is entirely removable. It is secured to the perimeter of the hammock with hook and loop fastener strips.

The MacCat tarps are indeed fantastic.

I believe the Clark hammocks are US made.

    Good hammocks, but pricy.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

It's also amusing that the lightest Clark (Ultralight Model) is exactly at Mocs' target setup weight (2lbs 6ozs).

Do the Speer Hammocks come with webbing to hang them from?

Yes, I believe they are polypro straps and they are included in the weight of the hammock (per the table on Speer's hammock page).

Anyone considering a Speer hammock should call and talk to Ed Speer directly. He is very accomodating to questions, and his enthusiasm for his products is refreshing.

Yep, & the bug net comes w/ it too. The hammock can be bought with or with out the tarp.
    And welcome to HF Mocs.
