Linville Gorge Trip Report 2011-2012 New Year's Eve

Linville Gorge Trip Report: Quinn and I completed a Linville Gorge rim hike over 2012 New Year's Eve. We spent New Year’s Eve at the base of Conley Cove warmed by a great New Year’s fire. Our trip included a barefooted crossing of the Linville River with 30 pound packs (Buuurrrr) on the Mountain to Sea Trail. Evening 1 Short hike to Lost Dog Camp (Conley Cove cliffs), Day 2 Rock Jock to Pinch In ad down to LVT, Day 3 LVG to MTS transfer then Shortoff Mtn ascent, Day 4 ascent of the Chmneys, Table Rock, and decent from Spence Ridge. Camped at base of Conley Cove. The last morning Acent of Conley Cove and home. Nights 20-s-30's and days in the 50's. A great way to start 2012. Pics on FaceBook at al brookins.

How was Lead Mine this time of year? It was less than friendly in perfect conditions during the Fall. I'd hate to see it when it muddy....and that was going DOWN it.

    Lead Mine

Lead mine was very slippery. I lost it twice and Quinn admitted to once. A little mud + grade + gravity was not a great combo. We also took a wrong turn and ended up on the most northern private field at the base.

Nice field that is. I found it going clockwise instead of your counter-clockwise route.
Roche and I figured out that the easiest way to find the trail down in that section was to look in the least likely place for it. We soon discovered that the trail was ALWAYS on the other side of the biggest pile of blow down.
Sometimes I think that if they could have put that trail in the trees or under the dirt they would have.
