The hidden danger of an underquilt.

So I was camping this weekend and had to switch to my backup hammock the Eno Doublenest. It was bedtime and I was trying out a suit I wear on the motorcycle in really cold weather. I had the Eno set up with my underquilt hanging right below it. I also had on one of those flight style caps with the fluffy ears. I was set for some cold weather hanging. So I pull down the front of my Eno, reach back and grab the top to pull it back and proceeded to mount up. That's when I realized that I was going over backwards. I did a one and a half gainer with a full twist before hitting the ground. I am sure that it looked like one of those Messing with Sasquatch commercials and I had to just lay there for a few minutes and get my breath back.

So to cut to the chase, when reaching back to pull your hammock out for entry make sure you are grabbing your hammock and not the underquilt. It occurred to me that I had missed the hammock and got the underquilt as I was laying there staring up at the hammock I should have been laying in.

The first time I tried a hammock with an underquilt I did the same thing. Problem was it wasn't some quiet section of woods where my embarassment would be kept to myself. It was at trail days with at least 20 witnesses.

Made the same mistake when I got my first UQ. Fortunately the JRB Nest is suspended by bungees (like most UQs) or I would have torn it for sure. Nothing hurt but my pride.

It was a bug net, not an uq, and I was ripped. Ridiculous.

When this happened to me I realized it quickly. Like, as I was going over. I thought "I can't believe I just grabbed the UQ".... thump! My lanky 6'2" frame must have looked like I was on one of those freaky carnival rides. That is one lesson that is learned for a long time!

I haven’t had the pleasure of falling because of my UQ yet. My best fall was on my second night of hanging on the trail. I was still learning how to center my hammock between two trees and tied simple loose knots, so I could adjust the hammock as necessary. I forgot about the foot end being loose and tied off the head end, pitched the tarp and got in. I just remember a whizzing sound as the suspension slipped thru the tree huggers and I flopped to the ground. The worst part of the story was that I had ended up at an impromptu Boy Scout Jamboree; and there were easily 80-100 scouts that were at Birch Run Shelter (on the AT here in Pa.) that had a pretty good view of my dismount(and the subsequent crawling out of the wreckage). To their credit they didn’t point and laugh but I know they wanted to. Oh well noting hurt but my pride
    Peace,
    Gris
