One of the virtues of ice-fishing, like gathering and processing firewood, is that it keeps you fairly active, and hence warm, not to mention providing easy access to liquid water. That's kind of what I was hoping to do out of our base-camp, as opposed to just spending the day milling about, cooling off, particularly around -30C. The only problem with the plan is that Algonquin doesn't permit ice-fishing..

I've seen some interesting lakes just north and south of Hwy 60 or off of Hwy 12, but I need to hear back on a couple of emails I sent out. For example there's a chain of lakes north of Oxtounge lake that look nice, and the Haliburton Forest Reserve has an extensive network of snowmobile trails.

    Getting Deeper

The snow is getting deeper in the Algonquin Area.

    http://www.algonquin-sc.on.ca/webcam.html

Let's hope it continues for the next month. ;-)

The temperature in the park is currently sitting at a comfy -25C (-14F) with no wind to speak.

    Cheers

    Brian

The first step is to admit you have a problem...so you'll never get to step two. Maybe there's a pill you can take

    New Hanger

    Hi

I've been lurking this thread. I am a new hanger, though I've spent a couple of nights in the back yard, between the trees at the back of the lot, and survived no trouble to -17c. I have done winter camping years ago, and am an experienced tent camper, so I should be able to survive. So, is the itinerary the same as above, Feb 18-20 in Algonquin?

I should be able to attend, but the only glitch is that I may have to go to BC to see family...but ticket prices will need to drop first.

So, how many are signed on? Are there varying ages? Hence fellow geezers or all young folk? Just asking?

What is the routine for meals? Each does your own?

    Thanks
    icecycle (aka Gerald)

    Hi Gerald,

Always happy to meet the new faces. Each of our hangs is always a little unique. We have a variety of age groups, so we collectively will be able to relate to the Follies of your youth and the "senior" moments as well. I often attend hangs with my Dad, so I suppose that makes us inter generational.

Food often consists of everyone doing there own thing, that's not to say that sometimes we don't have a bit of a spontaneous pot luck. Often when we are within striking distance of the cars we get a bit carried away. I'll let the rest of the group respond to the eating arrangements as I'm not quite sure myself.

Snowshoes and Snow Beasts, we have it all, and we usually have a fairly good time about it too!

    Welcome.

Welcome Gerald! Dan summed it up pretty well. Don't know if it's Algonquin 100% since chard was waiting on some e-mails but I have a feeling it will end up being Algonquin. The dates seem firm as well since there hasn't been any other dates discussed and it is a long weekend as well.

    Hi there Icecycle.

Hope you can make it out. As for meals I think it is best for everyone to take care of there own. But like Dan said spontaneous potlucks can occur. I personally am bringing at least a full days worth of extra meals for me and the "BOSS"...safety margin and extras to share.

Oh and we are confirming that we are in for sure. Have our insulation issues taken care of...THANKS Otter!
