I haven't done it, but it would be easily accomplished. As to whether or not you'd need a ground cloth, I guess it would depend on how wet the ground under you is, if you have a sleeping pad or not, the temperature outside, etc. Personally, I'd say yes. See attached photo. Thanks to Ed Speer for the photo from his site.

Claytor Jungle on the ground -
I would definitely recommend a ground cloth. Matter of fact, I would probably put my pad between the hammock & ground if (for what ever reason) I was ever forced to sleep on the ground.
Reason being, if you're going to continue to use the hammock as a hammock, you're going to want to give serious thought to protecting the hammock fabric from any kind of punctures or abrasion.
When you lay in the hammock, the fabric is stretched tight & supporting your weight.
That shouldn't be a problem as long as the fabric is in good condition.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
I had forgotten that was one of the other reasons I chose the Claytor, (over, say, the HH). Side entry zipper, and spreader bar loops on net make it easy for bivy/bugnet tent conversion in a no-tree situation. Add tarp and trekking poles as needed. (Haven't done it yet, myself)
