    Google Sketch Up

Anybody use Google Sketch Up to "blueprint" their DIY projects?

I just started watching the tutorial videos today and it looks sweet. Might give it a shot for the tarp I am planning this weekend.

I used it once to come up with a hammock design. I like paper more because you can get a better sense of how difficult sewing something up might be. But for a tarp I think all need to know is the type, size and how to cut your fabric. All of those things can be found on the forum.

I use Visio for most of my DIY projects, but I'm always interested in free or open source software. I'll check it out.

Love it. I was working on designs for tarps when I was tent camping. I've been trying to get more into it for some of my other DIY projects.

I use sketchup for my tarps and to mock up tent ideas etc. I use it mostly because it will do the math for you. When I was making my Whelen style tarp there were a bunch of funky angles etc so I could take one or two actual dimensions off the project, put it into sketchup and see how long my next piece needed to be with out doing the math myself.
So yes, I'm a sketchup fan.
    Good luck,

Sketch up is a awesome tool. My experience is that it is more suited for straight angles and not so much curves. I have designed home projects, backyard remodels, etc. Really easy to use. Using it just for a tarp would be great since the angles are straight! Designing it for anything else like curves in a hammock bottom could be challenging. I am not sure how much more functionality the paid version of google sketch up would bring.

You can get free plug-ins that allow more complex curves rather than a simple arc. Its a Bezier curve plug-in and it works pretty well, but I'm not sure if sketchup can measure the length of that curve?
    Good luck,
