adding to the list of potential problems.
It looks sewn through in construction-Looks mind you, I cant tell from the pic...if sewn through then probably not differentially cut either. So if snugged up properly and with no untoward air gaps it was probably operating beyond its ceiling. Couple this with the stated 1-2 inch loft, then I'd expect CBS (cold butt syndrom). A CCF pad would have gone a long way in this situation.
Too narrow? I dissagree with that. The foot end of the UQ can be much narrower than the chest area--many top notch UQ vendors are offering trapezoidal cut UQs now--as long at they are fitted to the hammock no problem.
I was in NZ for 3 weeks in early Spring...it can get seriously cold there.

I'm no expert, but as a guy who lives in an area that has relatively mild temps but the potential for serious breeezyness, I can guess that the wind you mention is a major player. I have certainly found that to be true for me. Identical temps / identical setup / identical location, several times (front yard). With breeze, way colder. Without, toasty.

To add to all other suggestions,
use a center support elastic cord attached to each side of your UQ (or several equally spaced along each side) and over your ridge line, snug it up to reduce UQ/hammock gaping and the dreaded CBS.

The long edge of your quilt looks different than mine in your second picture.
I use 1/8" shock cord in an open channel all along the long edge of my quilts.
I have found that to keep the quilt snug on the sides.
Then, 3/32" shock cord in the head & foot ends with cord locks prevents gaps in the ends.

As OldGringo said, get a dummy to help you.... that didn't come out right

Thx all. Sounds like I need to try the dummy option.

BTW the quilt is box wall, but not differentially cut. It has shock cord all around, attaching to press studs located on the hammock.

With respect to the Alpacka rafts, we slept on them, not with them in the hammocks!

I think this may be the culprit. If the UQ doesn't move independantly to stay snugged up to the body in the hammock, then dead spaces will develop as the body in the hammock changes positions. This will cause cold spots. Try suspending the UQ with shock cord run the length of the UQ sides and see if this helps. Then it will just be a matter of cinching the ends of the UQ as needed to close up any gaps at the head/foot ends.

You don't need more insulation; and air space between the the UQ and the bottom is not of itself much problem -- after all that space should quickly become a heated and insulated little room.

No, the problem is that the space is constantly leaking warm air out and drawing cold air in. A major feature of quality sleeping bags is draft-stopping. Same applies here. The major culprit? The furrows at the ends of the gathered end hammocks.

    Search here on draft-stoppers.

Do all of the above, if that doesn't work get a hammock sock. Love mine. Will always use it below 50*F.

Good luck dialing in your warmth,

With all the information given and the pics to me it looks like your hanging it too tight .... I would play around with your suspension some I would bet it would fix your problem I had the same problem with my JRB stealth being its sewn through and no differ cut you need to have it just right
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
