That is simply one of the most creative things I have seen to solve the problem of camping in a field. Amazing. When you mentioned geodesic sphere, i thought of a playground dome. Very ingenuitive. Does it come with a door?

Try you may, fail you might. -unknown
Very very cool. I wanna make one. Where do I go for plans????
Don't take life so seriously, its not permenant.
The Dome has a doorway but we haven't installed the bug screen or door yet. That and finishing the removable top cover are our next projects.
I am 6'3" and can walk into the Dome wearing my backpack without ducking. We modified the doorway using 7'6" poles and bent them to give the doorway an arch shape. The door will be made of two sections of blue tarps and will have magnets installed in the centre to help it close. When we want to keep it open the magnets will hold to the metal frame.
If you want to build a Geodesic Dome, I would suggest a Google and YouTube search. There are several good ideas and tutorials. " Desert Domes" has a great Dome calculator and some good links. There are lots of Domes at "Burning man"
Our Dome is a 22' diameter frequency 2 Geodesic Dome. The frame is made of 1 5/8" thin wall galvanized in-line fence posts.
For those that want a "purchase button" feel free to contact us and we MAY build you one to your specs. We are always looking for fund raising ideas. Getting to Jamborees can be expensive.
I to can't wait to see this dome in action! Awaiting pics....
Former hiker due to health issues those days are over.
We didn't have to change the length of any other poles when we modified the doorway. It did change the geometry of the pentagons on either side of the doorway and the angle of the triangle over the doorway. We did the door mod before we built the custom cover and it is made to match the changed geometry. We installed a clear plastic triangle over the doorway to give us a skylight. The pentagons are covered with blue tarps cut to the size and curve of the pentagons. The remaining triangles were covered with white tarp. Each joint is overlapped by 3", double glued and covered with tarp tape both inside and out.
Venturer colours are blue and our groups neckers are blue on blue so we made the dome cover Venturer blue. The white panels allow more light in and the combination gives a nice affect for the dome.
Thanks for the info! Great project and we are just getting High Adventure Crew 85 started up in Tupelo, MS. Several guys are already hangers and we are converting several each trip.
The Dome may be a project we take on in the fall as a group...love the idea and it looks like with cover and all we can do it for just under $900.
Thanks again.

I am waiting for Dutch to design one out of Titanium .

There was a geodesic dome on 6th at Bonnaroo this year - full of hammocks. Looked like 'the place to be!'
