I tried pins once; once!

That's a serious pain in the arske, and my hems still came out all wrinkled and puckered. Honestly when I don't pin I can keep the fabric tighter under the needle and get a nicer looking hem.

For long hems I have taken to using heat'n bond seam tape. I measure, fold, iron, & stitch. I use a 2" piece of seam tape about every foot. This seems to keep things more straight than pins, for me at least.

+1 on RamblinRev's videos. They can be found here. I found them immensely helpful on my first major project.

As to the hems, rolling them in your hand is just fine unless you're worried about exact seam allowances. In which case, laying a line down on the fabric, folding, and then ironing (on LOW heat for nylon; don't ask how I know that one ) on that line will help a lot with hitting your tolerances. At least, it does for me.

Oh, and go hiking first unless you absolutely need whatever piece of gear it is you're making for that hike. Which isn't much fun, no matter whether you enjoy the gear later. Trust me, you don't want to be in the position I was coming up on the 2nd Annual FL Hang...being behind the machine until 3 AM and then getting up at 7 to start again in order to finish for the hike...

Thanks everyone will watch the vids. I was joking about which to do. Hike has precedence. Will use my HH hyperlite for this trip w my JRB best UQ.
