No-cut width reduction on a hammock

I want to try different hammock widths using the same piece of fabric without cutting it. I don't want to narrow it too much and be committed because I cut a 68" piece of fabric down to 52". Has anyone folded the fabric under and tried whipping it to decrease the width? Would this even work? I'd try it and just let you know, but my 200yards of fabric hasn't made the crosscountry journey complete yet.......

I don't see just folding and whipping to work, as the folds wouldn't "hold" out in the main field of fabric. However, you could just gather and whip the width of fabric you want to try, and leave the remaining width outside of the whipping as just slack.

200 yards? How many hammocks are you planning on making?

Lol yeah no kidding. Maybe there was a special? It may work leaving it slack though. When you do that just remember if you do end up cutting and whipping it will be a little different than the slack. Maybe whip it leaving material out and then try folding then extra over and tying that to the whipping temporarily. Does that make sense

So that's for one hammock, right? And you are thinking about going more narrow to save some weight :lol

Here's something to think about - I recently made a 67" wide, 1.1 double layer, and it is the most comfortable hammock I've ever slept in. It's also 11' long.
I'm a bit tall at 6'-1" but my philosophy is, wider is better.
Even my hammock probably could be a bit shorter, but I'm sticking to the full width of fabric.

As to experimenting, I'm all for that and I would go with the idea of leaving the extra width outside the whipping. I suspect that folding it under would influence how the hammock will lay and give you a false impression.

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping that whipping just what I want will work, with a little extra floppiness.
MAD, you're probably right and the extra width is what I suspect I will want, but I want to see if narrower is still comfy. SGTRock's ghost hammock got me thinking I could go narrow, and it would save weight, but I'm skeptical it could work for me. I use a BB and a GTUL and I feel a huge difference in comfort, but that's obviously going to be the case with those 2. I like the weight of the GTUL though!
