For an under quilt check out the under quilt tab on the Google doc. You want the baffles going long ways and Grizz's formula accounts for the difference in inner and out shell radii. I have a video here&showsearch=0">here&showsearch=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> about building one of those. If I had that to do again I might add more 2 more baffles (8 channles instead of 6) or just pack more down into the outermost channels, they tapper down a lot at the top and in mine don't have much down, or I could have made the whole thing wider.

@Murl: No, it was builder error pure & simple. I kept having to fix formulas & reprinting the directions* and at some point I accidentally changed my baffle height to 3" but didn't update the amount of down to match.

*for example discovering I was short a baffle because of an Off-By-One error, which is why this is 17 chambers instead of 16

I made an UQ for my brother and it took a week but that was only working on it 2 to 3 hours a night. You should have no problems tackling this in a week and a half.

@hikingdad Sweet. 22 baffles, you are a patient man.
How did your actual finished dimensions compare to what you entered into the spreadsheet?

Looking through the speadsheet, I gotta say, this is an excellent planning tool. a few questions though, what is the baffle margin and sewing margin at the bottom? I first thought the sewing margin was the seam allowance, but then looking at the final calculations for inner and outer shells, I noticed a 1" seam allowance was already accounted for. just curious.

Thanks, glad to know it's helping people.

I should rename it seem allowance to match convention.
The first is seem allowance for the shell, on a per edge basis. E.g. selecting 1" will add 1" to all sides.
The separate baffle allowance is in case you want to use a different allowance on the baffles.

A note in case it comes up. We often get sloppy talking about baffles, using the term to mean both the wall itself & the space enclosed. Properly speaking baffle is only the wall & I've tried to reflect that in the spreadsheet, using "spaces" for the space enclosed to spare other people "fence errors" like my 17 baffle tq.

If setting allowance to 0 still includes 1" than there is an error I need to fix.

Ok, that makes more sense. I did however, now that this has been explained to me, notice that the final outer shell dimension calculations has a 1" seam allowance and the sewing margin. Isn't this redundant? I just wanted to make sure I was correct before I started my project tonight. Thanks

I went and reviewed the spreadsheet & figured out what the problem was (& fixed a small other one while I was there)

The 1" hem (now relabeled in the cell notes) is actually the margin for shock cord channels so you want that.

There was an error in the way baffle width was calculated that made them a little too wide, I fixed that. You should be good to go.

Remember, since you've designed for 14 chambers (assuming I'm seeing your specs on the spreadsheet), you only cut out & sew on 13 baffles, the top & bottom "baffle" are formed by sewing the top & bottom shut.

Also, run your shock cord before you sew shut, much easier.
