I think having an insulated hammock that farts feathers might deflate my ego some. So would hearing your proposed product names, so keep 'em to yourself.

I get my air mattress valves from where KenDen posted. I made 2-3 air mattresses from heat sealable nylon and these were more user friendly than Thermarest style valves.

Cheap, easy, and light. They come with an adhesive that will stick to cuben well, but I still use Seamgrip. Works like a champ.

Did I read it right that your going to attempt an air mattress from cuben?

I was just thinking of a "NeoAir" style cuben mattress the other day. I have no funds for one yet, but I've been working on the math. I'll be following this thread with interest.

    Ryan,
Something along those lines. I make insulated hammocks, and I'll probably make one with down and cuben pretty soon. When the insulating layer is hanging below the hammock there isn't the same pressure on the structure as there is with an air matress supporting the sleeper, but I'd like to be able to speed up inflation and deflation, so some sort of valve and pump/bag will be necessary. Also, I'd like to inflate some tubes enough to provide a bit of rigidity to the structure so spreader bars and side tieouts could be minimized or entirely eliminated. Stay tuned.

    WV,

I remember reading (and seeing a video) on someone here on HF built an all cuben hammock with attached underquilt, but at the moment I can't seem to locate the thread as his method for filling the quilt with air to loft would/might work for you!

I will keep looking for that thread and post it here!

Thanks CB. I just re-read that thread; it's great info and motivational material. Waiting for Shug's video to download in HD so I can look at that inflation system again. My cuben ziploc may be a prototype for an attached inflation bag that can be turned inside out to store the hammock. That's a long way off, however.

Thanks again to Strung Out for his shining example!

Re: Spreader Bars and Tie-Outs for Tarps

If you're talking about tarp spreaders, have you seen Bill Fornshell's balloon bed concept over on Backpacking Light?

I'd think that if the balloons could take the weight of an occupant like that as a sleeping pad, they'd probably work for spreader bars. They'd be a lot cheaper than cuben, and I can't see the weight savings of cuben being a lot with that size material.

    Just a thought

    WV,

Here is a link to Enlightened Equip's page with pics showing the inflation tube!
