    DIY Whoopie question

Hello, been reading a lot on this forum but just started posting. I have read several threads and watched several videos on DIY whoopie slings made from amsteel, and am wondering if when you thread the amsteel back into itself its possible to miss the center? or if any threading of the amsteel back into itself could possibly miss the center and therefore not have the same weight bearing capacity if that makes sense? basically what i want to know is if DIY whoopies are pretty easy to do and mistake proof, or if i should buy a set of whoopies to begin with. thank you

Amsteel has a hollow core, I won't say that its impossible to miss the center because if I did then someone would post a picture or video of it being done, but I will say that it is hard to miss. Handling amsteel takes a little bit of getting use to, but it is fairly straight forward to make whoopie slings out of once you know how.

Take your time and measure twice cut/bury once. Good luck.

I was nervous when I made my first pair, but after I finished I remember thinking how easy it was.... I honestly think you'll be fine.

It's possible to miss the center, but not very likely. It forms its own core which is almost like a channel, so you should be fine. Think of it like the old chinese finger trap.

When doing a bury I think it would be pretty hard to miss the center of the amsteel. You'll know immediately if you're not in the middle.

However when doing the fixed eye brummel splice I try to make sure that there are an equal number of strands on each side. I don't know if it matters but it seems like this would be the spot to be worried about it.

You may be able to find it in a boat supply store like West Marine if you have one in town. Otherwise it is available online from several of our cottage dealers and Redden Marine.
