    Amsteel Availability

    Greetings from Minnesota!
I see there are many hangers here in MN, and especially in the metro area. I'm in the north metro (Lino Lakes) and I'm wondering whether you all know of any nearby stores that care 7/64. The closest I can find in West Marine in Stillwater. I can purchase through web and have it shipped to Stillwater free for pick up, but that's still a hike. Thanks in advance!

There are a few online vendors here that would ship out to you for a nominal price - Scott at DIYgearsupply and Paul at Arrowhead Equipment. They may be worth a look!

My local West Marine did not carry it in stock, but they ordered it for me.

It's on sale now through the westmarine website at $.20/ft (regularly $.26). You'll pay tax, but they will ship it free to any store.

Agreed. But I just realized I have a sis-in-law in Hopkins (another westmarine location). I could also prevail once more on a colleague to make a pick for me in Stillwater. I just received from her today my 2 quarts of Z-Spar Captains Varnish that I will be using to revarnish the inside of my 1925 Old Town Otca.

Well, West Marine's right hand doesn't know what its left hand is doing. I tried to order amsteel online to have it shipped to a local store, just as the website says. I didn't see the clickable option so I phoned the company. "We haven't had that option for a few months," said the woman with whom I spoke. I pointed out that they should take that down from their website and thanked her for her time. I then called the store in Hopkins to see whether they had any in stock. All they had was 1/8" at $.45/ft., so twice what I wanted to pay and overkill anyway. "But we can order that for you," the man said. "At $.22/ft?" I asked, "Same as on the advertised price online? No extra for shipping?" "Yep, $.22/ft. No extra for shipping." It will arrive next Thursday.

So you can't order it online and have it shipped to your local store, but your local store can order it for you and have it shipped to them. What is it about convenience and automation that they don't understand?

Before pushing your West Marine staff too hard, take a look at what their customers are spending on marine stainless and brass, and for lines of sizes mariners need and use. Discounted cordage remnants sell for over $100.

    Ouch.

I use my local West Marine, and take advantages of price matching on what is already some of the least expensive line they sell ; but especially then, the service I ask for is just that price matching.
