    Buy the underquilt first.

    You need more insulation underneath.

    Yes

UQ first, you can use any blanket for a TQ.

    It depends.

    1. Do you already have a sleeping bag? If so, you could open that up and use it as a top quilt. In this case, I would buy the underquilt first.

    2. If you do not have a sleeping bag, then I would buy the top quilt first. For the bottom insulation, use cheap closed cell foam (CCF) pads until you can afford a bottom quilt.

Yup, UQ. You have a sleeping bag, right? That's your top quilt until you feel the need to upgrade.

I got by with a sleeping bag on top & a pad underneath until I had the knowledge of which UQ would be best for me. I got it then later upgraded the sleeping bag for an TQ.

I would go with the UQ first because I tend to need more bottom insulation than top to stay warm

Get the underquilt first. You can use a sleeping bag or practically anything else on top, but nothing matches the warmth and convenience of an underquilt (IMHO).

As already stated, I'd go UQ first. There is a lot of convective heat loss in a hammock even is warm temperatures. You could feel completely comfortable on top but have a chill on the bottom. Even if you wear clothes, laying in the hammocks compresses everything so there is no warm air trapped anywhere. A pad works but it can cause cold shoulders and I find it a pain to get positioned properly under me because I'm on the bigger side.
