    Good day All

First great site, soooo much information, been reading for days now

Looks like I'm another Scouter looking for alternatives, just got back into working with the kids again and a brand new set of youngsters to boot.

I want to get the hang of this hammock thing as an alternative to the traditional tents.

Question 1 - I`m a short 5`2` and 195 lbs, with 2 bad lower discs and a side sleeper just to add another issue to the mix. Is a hammock a viable option in your opinion.

Having read many posts, I`m thinking about possibly a hennessy Expedition, ( reservations about the weight limit) or an explorer UL (either with Whoopie Slings,) and an upgraded Hex Tarp.

Question 2 being as we will be winter camping later this year, does anyone have any suggestions for sub zero insolation suggestions.

    Many thanks

    Kevin

    Hi from the East Coast.
I think with your back issues a Hammock may be a must have. One of my leaders has back issues and has suffered quite a bit in the mornings after sleeping on the ground. I am trying to convince her to try the Hammock I made for her...but she isnt just one of my other leaders so that complicates things
I have the expedition Asym Zip. I love it. I also sleep on my side and have no issues except it seems I sleep on the wrong side for a Hennessy. I end up sleeping with my face really close to the bug net. Its not a big deal and hasnt cost me any sleep but it has prompted my to DIY some hammocks....2 so far and material for 3-4 more en-route
I will let those more experienced chime in on insulation options.

Yeah I feel their pain, it used to be way fun now I need at least 2 coffes and a half an hour to get the back fluid again after a night on the ground. The cot worked well the last time but might be a bit much to pack in for the next camp

    Welcome!

I think a hammock would definitely be better than the ground for your back and it is possible to side sleep in a hammock.

In terms of winter insulation, I think an underquilt is your best bet for comfort. You can get by with sleeping pads but you can get more warm from an UQ because it wraps around you and there is less chance of it migrating on you over the course of the night.

It can get expensive to buy this gear but if you sew or know someone that can, you can get by quite well converting old sleeping bags into top quilts and bottom quilts.

    Have fun!

Welcome to the forums from South GA, I did the same as you and spent days reading the posts before I joined. You could read for months and still not see it all. Took me a while to realize what the boards were missing.

    Drama.

Countless kudos for hammocks on bad backs, knees, shoulders etc.
All good advice here, no caveats.
    Enjoy!
