    I'm really glad I asked. Must confess - my assumption was that more people would go for the shorter hang rather than the longer. It's always cool getting another perspective!

    You're right about that.

    It's kind of the same as carving. If you take a little wood, you can always take more away. Take too much and you cannot add more back.
    If your trees are two short you can't compenate for anything. Your sag is affected and you can't set up your tarp. With trees too far apart, sag can be compensated for by a structural ridgeline and you can always add more line to extend your suspension and tarp ridgeline.
    Don't let life get in the way of living.

    i have never paced off trees. hundreds of nights and all i can say is, i always use 12'+ (if the tarp fits, hang it)
    i like closed, rather then farther, because of tie off of hammock is lower.
    It's not procrastinating, its proactively delaying the implementation of the energy-intensive phase of the project until the enthusiasm factor is at its maximum effectiveness.
