After being inspired by all the Turtlestands, I tried making one of my own.

I went to Lowes and picked up 6 2x2's. Most if not all of the wood was warped or twisted, but I picked out the best I could find. Each one was $1.52. I cut them down to 7' each.

    Other supplies were:

    (1) 1 3/8" 10'6" top rail $8.99
    (2) 1 3.8" rail end $3.00
    (2) Extra heavy 6" T-Hinge $9.94

    Hardware
    (4) 5/16" Stainless Steel anchor shackle $17.72
    (4) 1/4"-20x2" stainless bolt $4.72
    (3) 1/4" stainless washers $7.50
    (2) 1/4"-20 stainless nuts $4.58

I also went to West Marine and picked up 10' of 3mm Vectran V-12 line. It was $9.18. They did not have Amsteel, and the Vectran had a breaking strength of 1,600 lbs. and very low stretch. I used this line to hang the pole from the hinges/shackles.

I used about 10' of Zing-It for each spread limiter. The bottoms of the 2x2's are about 4' apart from each other.

Here is a Hennessy Expedition with a very saggy ridgeline. I had the plastic rings secured to the shackles at each end of the pole. It would help to have another 2 feet on the pole.

    Another view..

I added a CRL, and it helped a little, but a longer pole is required with the standard Hex tarp.

Without the tarp the hammock hangs quite nicely.

Good looking stand Troy64. Like the painted toprail.

could the center piece be a 2x2 cut in the middle with another hinge set out to the opposing force? so it could be fold in half

In my stand, I cut the pipe in half. One end had a tapered (or reduced diameter) portion that fits into the opposing end. That way each length of pipe is about five feet long. I used a reciprocating saw with a metal saw blade, and it buzzed right through it.

A segmented wood top rail might be tricky. The forces might not always be up or down in the middle of the top rail. A metal sleeve covering both wood pieces might be safer.

The metal rail with two end pieces is a very cheap/economical and innovative use of materials. It is also easy to add additional length if needed (e.g., adding a 2 or 3 foot section of pipe).

That may work if you bolt the hinge through and use a barrell bolt. So basically hinge on bottom and barrell bolt on top. Everything bolted through. May work but there is a lot of pressure in the middle which is why everyone is using pipe. If you try this, I would used the heaviest bolt to try. This sounds interesting. Another is to sleeve middle with sq metal tube, bolt through and use wing nuts on bolts. It would be interesting if some of the enigineers figure the amount of force in the middle/per weight of occoupant. I am no good at physics. Interesting proposition here!

finally getting some "field" use...just returned from a three night fishing/camping trip. worked flawlessly.

my own version based on the ideas found here. thx turtlelady/olddog/hppyfngy.

it worked so well, while tearing down, i noticed a family of spiders had found residence in my snakeskins. haha.
