I use a gear hammock that I made - under 6 ounces and also works as a camp seat

If you're interested, there is also a detailed video on its construction as well as threads on this forum.

Ever since Scouting I've always hung it on a tree. I then put a pack cover over it before bed. The only thing that can get wet is the waist belt...but it would in a rain anyway.

I've hung it on my ridgeline under the tarp a few times, but I think thirty years of habits are hard to break.

...I did break the habit of ground dwelling
Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.

+1 on hanging it from your suspension. Your pack should be mostly empty once you've set up camp and hung your food, so it doesn't stress the line out or affect the hang.

FWIW, not for gram weenies ;-) Carry and extra 25 ft of study line like 1/8 in poly or amsteel and hang a second line under the tarp at night to hang stuff off of or hang in the breeze during the day as a clothes line. That way the junk hanging off the line does not mess up your hang. Gear hammock does the same thing. ;-))

In the truck, of course! LOL! Actually, while in the woods, on the ridge line someplace, in my new gear hammock/seat, or on a groundcloth under the hammock. People who have camped with me (car-style) won't believe this, but I carry very little if I am hiking/camping. Skin-out base weight is under 20 pounds, with food. Easy to hang up someplace.

I'm thinking about getting this http://www.highlander-outdoor.com/pa...58&pnid=301462 It has an extra flap that zips up covering your straps. Keeps the bugs out. Has a carry handle you could hang it from a tree with. Only thing is I'm having trouble finding an American retailer.

I use a 3mil contractor trash bag to line my pack. Once in camp I lay it under my hammock with my pack on top of it along with anything I might want during the night and anything that needs to stay dry goes in the bag. Works great and those bags are HUGE!
