It's really small and the water tends to be brown and has lots of algae. But, it's not a bad place to camp. We just may need to pack in our water. It's a pretty area with plenty of trees and shade.
Only a couple of sections are currently open, and most of them only partially so. They are really doing a good job of removing widowmakers from the trail. Section 1 from the Richards Trailhead to FM149, (including the associated loop), is the longest, and maintenance has recently been completed. I chose that pond as a recognizable landmark more than as a water source. With the recent rains, all reports are that water sources are plentiful---in fact there are places where there may be too much water. You can see the algea in that pond on Google Earth!

USFS rules say that there's no camping with 300 feet of any trailhead, but that's the only restriction in this area. We wouldn't have to go very far in to set up camp and leave water in the cars if that's the concensus. There's also access on FS Road 203, so we could camp near there and cache water where the trail crosses.

Water will be the primary safety concern., next will be mosquito protection.

There are road crossings at 1.8, 3.4 & 8.7 miles, giving several oportunites for shuttling and caching if hiking is what we want to do. It all depends on how much hike and how much hang the concensus decides.

As far as scheduling, I have Sunday School duties every other weekend beginning Jul 28/29, so there are two August weekends open for me. I had planned on doing Scout The Wonder Dog and the Abandonded Farmhouse, but I don't think there would be any problem doing Scout The Wonder Dog and The Strangers In The Woods.

I'll scan a couple pages of the trail guide regarding Section 1 and post them up here.

I was hoping you would jump in here Dave. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Sarge....sounds like we may be onto something here! I would be all about some hiking. I'm going to leave Reggie at the house (boxers don't do well in the heat.) Which 2 weekends do you have available?

Looks like 8/4, 8/18 & 9/1---but with this much advance notice, I can say 8/25 as well.

8/4 is likely too soon for other folk.

    You better be there Tim!

I'll have to be back at work Monday. Are we still talking about just doing Saturday night? If I'm driving 4 1/2 hours, I may want to do a Friday/Saturday? I'm not sure if I want to be out in this heat for 2 days though.
