    Wallmart Outdoor Products 5x7 Tarp

I bought the Walmart Outdoor 5x7 trap last year as an emergency hiking tarp for my day hikes. Every now and then I see posts about the tarp asking how well it would work as a tarp for a hammock so I thought I would set up a hammock with the tarp and see how well it worked.

    Depails

    Sold by Walmart about $10

Outdoor Products 5Wx7L tarp...made in China

    http://www.outdoorproducts.com/Produ...p-5ft-x-7ft/12

Manufacture says it weights 12 oz but mine weights 9 oz with stuff sack

Made of water resistant urethane coated nylon

Comes with 4.5” x7”stuff sack. Stuff sack has mesh front and back to save weight and has a hanging loop. Hard to get back into stuff sack after removing.

Tarp I got is blue. Did not see any other colors.

Comes with brass grommets in each corner and one in the middle of each side. Seams are sewn all the way around the tarp.

As the ENO DN is a very popular hammock I decided to use it for my test. I used an a Single Line Tarp Ridge Line - Dutch Edition with Dutchware for hanging the tarp.

I tried to use full biners with the tarp and found the grommet holes are too small. Micro Biners work just fine.

I set up the tarp as a rectangular tarp and as a Diamond. Either way it did not cover the hammock length wise and offered minimum side protection.

Bottom line....if it rains, you will get wet. If you have a down sized child's hammock then it might offer enough protection.

The only way I would use this tarp is if the weather was nice and I just need something to keep the sun off my head.

Sewing 2 of these tarps together might make it big enough to offer enough protection but you would have to overlap the seams as there will be grommets in the way.

IMO, there are much better tarp options out there.

Before I bought my Toxaway from AHE i bought 2 of these and sewed them together. Had it out in some nasty weather that included heavy heavy rain fall and stayed completely dry. I now use it as a back up and for friends who need tarps. Sewing 2 together will work perfectly. I agree that there are much better options out there, but if you're on a budget you can't beat this.

I left them in and just sewed. Then seam sealed the stitch.

The other use I would consider is as a cook tarp. IF one is practicing bear safety one does not cook under the hammock tarp. OTOH the 5x7 will provide for 1 or 2 folks to sit by the stove/fire and keep off sun or light rain.

Very practical as a cheap backup! I like it. I assume a 9$ tarp is probably more like 20 in canada though. We get hosed

I made an undercover out of one, minimal effort to fish shock cord thru the seams. Worked well and is good to 50*. My 2nd DIY after the 1st tablecloth.
