    bridge hammock question

Hey guys, I am looking at grizzes excellent lite weight bridge design-----Just wondering if there is a way to make it all of one piece of fabric, instead of sewing the end pockets on? (I thought some one had a post about this a while back, but I cant find it )

Also, is it a problem to make a bridge hammock too wide? (is it possible?)

From a theoretical perspective, you can make it as wide as you want (spreader bar width and fabric). The constraint being the suspension triangle side length also gets longer as the spreader bar width gets wider. Which adds up to the overall length of the hammock getting longer and that limits where you can hang it.

    Cheers

You can leave extra fabric and gather it for the ends but it won't look as good. Or you can sew darts to bring it together, but then you are back to sewing and Grizz's method is probably easier.

As BrianW said, you can go wider, but if you also widen your spreader, your suspension triangle has to lengthen otherwise the forces on the bar increase. If you widen The fabric but keep the spreader the same length, your hammock will be deeper, and at some point you will notice more shoulder squeeze.

    Something like this?

If you're worried about weight, a lot of the extra material at the ends can be trimmed back, I left it long to create a storage area.

I suppose you could also use draw strings to close the ends.

The video in the above link shows how i made the bridge ends out of one piece. Go to about the 8 minute mark to see the endcaps on the bridge. There is a post in this same thread that shows the pattern for the end.
