Lines in the Pines for Kids (NJ)

In the Wharton State Forest at Batsto, NJ on 11/4 from 10-3 they will be having

All day event (2 Sessions) on educating the kids on the Pine Barren of NJ

NO details yet, but i will post as i get the final schedule.

They want a camping/hiking demonstration in the picnic area. i need a few to set up camp and answer questions about their gear. i will need a few tenters also. If you could do a little presentation it would be great, but we need to keep it simple. Topics like Safety, How to follow blazes, Map and Compass, Lightweight Stoves, Backpacking Gear, Weather considerations, Evolution of Tents to Hammocks

That night we can all go to Buttonwood Camp that is 3 miles away by car. (Batona Trail 5.5 mi). you can car camp here and there is paddling in the Mulica River (remember its NOVEMBER)

    TY

This sounds like a great time. Keep me informed, if I have the time (and the money to get there, currently unemployed) I would be glad to help out.

I've got a bridge I could set up if you don't already have one. I don't have formal training, but I have spent my whole life in the bush and wouldn't mind helping out if still needed.
In regards to map reading, show them how to work a map and compass, then have them try to find a spot you picked out.
Safety, just break it down into short subjects ie. knife safety, fire safety...

since it is for children we are keeping it simple and you probably know more then me . the fire dept. (Forest Fighting Div.) will be right next to us. we don't want to double the fire thing, but now we can do stoves. we can't do knives, but if an older child asks, you could show them your knife and explain safety.
as for the bridge GREAT. i think there we be more Rangers, State Trooper and Firemen at our site. they can't wait to see the hammocks. even the K-9 division want to know how a dog sleeps in a hammock
i'm going to need to put together some literature also. if anyone knows of stuff all ready to copy and give out.

    TY, KK
