1/4" amsteel woopie slings

Well, a friend gave me a 30' section of 1/4" amsteel, and I made whoopie slings with it. (I will try to get pics to post tomarrow)

The thing is, I have watched several vids on youtube of how to make WS, and they all make the bury look easy. I had a very hard time with it. The only way I got it to work was to buy the smallest knitting neddles I could find, and tope the tag end to it. This was still quite a task.

I have seen guys on you tube just tape the end of the amsteel and feed it in the bury.

So my question is, is my trouble the size of my amsteel or am I just really bad at making whoopie slings?

The reason I used 1/4" is it was free, and If it's free it's for me. Did I cause myself a lot of frustration by being cheap?

In my experience, the bigger the diameter of Amsteel (or any rope), the easier it is to milk the bury. Sounds like you're trying to push the rope through, when it's a lot easier to pull with a doubled-over piece of wire.

Think about the Chinese finger trap when you're milking the bury and that might help.

I have used the hollow tube from a meat thermometer to run it through like you described with much success. I usually go ahead and cut out the strands for the taper, slide that into the tube and scotch tape it smoothly as possible. I put the pointed end of the tube in at the insertion point, and bunch up the part I am burying into until I bring the point back out at the exit mark. Then I slide the bunched up "sleeve" back towards the taped end of the tube a little at a time. It works great for me.

There's a stiffness to new cord that makes a pig made of it easier to push. But, use tape to wrap the end of the tapered bury, and the taping, in my experience is easier.

But, larger is harder, done by those with a little experience? No.

Soft shackles with the complete bury, made of of 1/8" cord, have a nice heft to them.

did you taper the end of the line before trying to feed it through?

taper the end, push the rope together where you are tying to push thru the bury (to make the inside diameter bigger) and use a plastic yarn needle in four pack from wallyworld. I actually pull it thru doubled thru the eye of the needle with no problem

You are going to be able to hang a Mack truck with those things.

I tried a few things and decided copper wire is just simple and easy. I'm not sure what gauge it is but its about 1 mill in diameter. I use about a 12" section folded in half. The fold is like the eye of a needle. Works fine, lasts long time.

I still say the larger diameter ropes are easier to splice. Before I ever grabbed a piece of Amsteel or Zing-It, I tried splicing on 3/8" bright yellow marine rope. The braid opens up real nice when milking and you can really grasp the concept of splicing before tackling the smaller diameter.
