I've been lucky so far. I've never hit the ground, but I did have a knot slip (I tied my alpine butterfly wrong) but I stopped just before hitting the ground. I can say that amsteel is good stuff!

I'm kinda new to the 'Dutch Clip', still doing the research, but based on the picture you posted and the pictures of the Dutch Clips on OutdoorTrailGear it look like the tip of the 'U' or 'C' or 'n' (depending on orientation; opposite side where you have the strap attached in the pic) sheared off... Am I missing something?

    Edit:
.... So it did shear off... Didn't really get that the first time I read all the posts ....

It looks as though the strap was not seated in the clip the way it was intended. The end that broke shouldn't have any stress on it, it is just to keep the strap from slipping off. Sorry to say, and no offense intended, but looks like user error. IMO......Rr

Someone passed along some good advice to me a few years ago and it rings true today... "Never hang higher then you are willing to fall". To this day when I am scouting a place to hang I make orient the head to the clearest ground below so if I do drop, the chances of me splitting my melon open is reduced.
Happy Trails to one and all.

Mule, sorry to hear about your fall, glad it was only your wind you lost. For the record, 220 is not bad, I'm there myself.

mountain_man_mike, what you say makes great good sense, in case of failure, plan for the easiest landing.

I concur with road runner I have never seen dutchware break when being used properly.

That looks like the old style Dutch Clip. Let Dutch know and he should swap it out for you. If you use that old style Dutch Clip and use straps you need to sew a few stiches thru the strap so it can not slip off the eye of the clip. I use waxed dental floss. I have been using the clips for about 2 years now with out any problems

The ends of the arms of the aluminum dutch clips can be stressed to breaking when not set properly. If the webbing is not around the tree correctly (ie, it runs through the clip and back 180 degrees) or if clip gets turned and the webbing hits that little hook on the end of the arm and you apply weight it can break the end of that arm off. Looking at your picture that is what I would say happened.

One reason why Dutch designed the Dutch Clip ti version with the angled arms is so the webbing running through the Dutch Clip ti is prevented from twisting the clip.

We ask that everybody please be careful and inspect your suspension, wether it is Dutchware or not, before each and every time you get into your hammocks.

I agree, the ones I had on were not quite a beefy as the other couple sets I have. I think I used them wrong or they would not have broken. Dutch is going to make it right. I'll let everyone know how the new ones work.

Glad you weren't injured Mule! How long have these particular clips been in service?
