Are Under Quilts Really That Good???

I am new to hanging. I currently am using a Thermarest pad in my EX Asym Zip. I have been thinking about getting a under quilt but not quit sure yet. Wanted to know if you all could weigh in on how much more u like an under quilt than a pad. Also would like to know what differences u noticed after making the switch. Differences in comfort, warmth and weight. Thanks.

I really notice the warmth radiating thru the fabric. Much like when you put on a down jacket. Once the temp drops below 30 degrees (at least for me) I can really feel the difference between my UQ and ridgerest pad.

I move a lot in my sleep, and if the pad isn't held in place somehow it ends up squirting one way or the other and I end up chasing it all night long. True for me even with a double body gathered end, if the pad is free to move, when I move, it will move too, and not to my advantage. Pad pockets in bridge hammocks are a different matter though, pads stay put and are for me, useable. A difference though is that an UQ's sides will rise up higher than my shoulders and hips, and provide some insulating value if a knee or arm ends up off the pad.

Underquilts are expensive and that is a major drawback for those getting into hammocking. It makes sense to use gear you already have like pads and sleeping bags. I have three pads of various sizes and warmth ratings and have had decent success in my dl Warbonnet blackbird. I fing that unless I use my gigantic REI pad, I have cold spots; I am 6'1 220lbs. My Big Agnes AirCorepad is just too narrow. Unless I am car camping, it is unrealistic to carry my REI pad. I have also only tested I into the mid 40s an have been very warm. My wife has had a 0 Incubator from HG and has loved it. I ended up selling older gear and just put an order in for one as well. We backpack so the size and weight benefits of an underquilt over a pad make sense. If you are happy with your pad and it works, why change or perhaps start with a less expensive one like a JarBridge from Arrowhead. I is a quality UQ that won't break the bank. If money isn't an issue, then get one and you will not regret it.

Pads just don't let you enjoy the full goodness of a hammock. But yes, it's still better than sleeping on the ground.

An underquilt has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

Last weekend I put a 20* Phoenix on a hammock for a first time hanger to try on a 40* night, he really liked it and thanked me. I can't wait to hear back from him when he hangs next time at home with a pad.

i have been uncomfortably down to 30 degrees with a pad.
