@Likeapuma: interesting that you mention folks with bad backs yet being interested in hammocks. That's a good thing! The response I've gotten from several of the other program staff has been, "Not interested. I have a bad back and could never sleep in a hammock.". The subsequent discussions have not been fruitful. ;D

So far, I've given away three hammocks to program staff. One guy now brings his along to lounge and is sort of working towards hammock camping. Another guy gave his to his daughter because of his bad back. Didn't even try it. The third guy hasn't even opened the hammock yet, and the hammock was given last summer.

What is that saying about horses and water?

Oh well! More tree choices for me!

I slept in my hammock with my scouts and never slept so well. I came home and woke with a back ache after sleeping in my own bed. The hammock was pain free.

Re: Hammock popularity growing in Scouting

I don't know the extent of their back troubles, but I mentioned how my back bothers me when sleeping on the ground & how it disappears in the hammock... Seemed to pique their interest some!

If I had extras/did DIY, I'd just set up hammocks everywhere, just because I imagine people would be more open to climbing into an empty hammock rather than my "house".

Just heard that some of the Scouts I had at my hammock camp last weekend have ask the leader, who is organizing our Soapbox Derby, if they can hang instead of using a tent. Now they want me to run a demo that weekend. It's funny how things catch on.

My Son has a WBBB setup but still prefers to sleep in tents with his buddies rather than alone in a hammock. He loves it though when just the two of us go .

Man, we've come a long way since my days at Philmont in those canvas pup tents.

I WISH I had been a hanger back in my scouting days! Maybe when I have kids of my own I can influence them from early on to use hammocks!
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

Well, Philmont doesn't allow hammocks at all, so not really..

About two years ago now one of our assistant scoutmasters (now the scoutmaster) built hammocks for the entire troop! Since we have used them practically year round. Including a week long trip to Sea Base. They were perfect for the scouts to carry inside their dry bags.

This year at Region Rally Scout camp 2013 in Glenreagh Northern NSW, Auzzieland, I was the only hammock camper there. One guy didn't believe that I could put descender rings on a hammock and what was the point of that blah blah etc..., so I showed him, he was suitably impressed, we had some "leader juice" and we ended up talking for an hour or so about hammock camping Hopefully Ill see some more hammocks next year.
