    diy underquilt idea?

so i had a dream last night and in it i constructed a crazy easy underquilt. so i need the brains on here to help see if this is a plausable idea. imagine if you will please.... i sewed together a bunch of dollar store windsocks lengthwise and stuffed each sock aka "chamber" with down in quart size mesh bags. will this work?

I think that would only work if the windsock material was down-proof, as the mesh bags would not contain the down. In terms of design, it would be similar to a sewn-through construction. In all honesty, a sewn-through quilt would probably be easier to make than trying to attach a bunch of windsocks together.

The problem I see is the windsocks are not likely to be downproof and the mesh bags certainly aren't so they add nothing but weight.

I think this would also require as much sewing as a normal quilt and not save any work.

not sure what u mean by downproof? could this be solved by using noseeum? this is why i asked if it needed to breath. i have already sewn the winsocks. they are made of treated flag nylon. alot less sewing for sure. since i did not have to sew any borders. hems already in place for shock cord. $1 a piece 4in. tubes. 12 tubes. 54"long 48"wide

can't wait to see the updates on this one!!! if it works out well i may employ this idea for myself. although i will agree with catsplat that a sewn through construction is pretty easy for a diyer.

"downproof" means a fabric that, while still breathable, has a tight enough weave that down filaments cannot pass through it and escape. Most fabrics are not downproof.

Someone posted recently about having to remove down and start over, after discovering that his project fabric was not downproof. I would not want to be in his shoes...

Do you have any down to try?

I have a bag of... well... somewhat down... lots of feathers, but lots of down, too...

It's somewhat lofty, somewhat fluffy, and heavier than good down... but it would let you know if your idea holds water... er... down..

    Pay shipping and it's yours...
