    requesting sewing help with topquilt

I currently have a RAB top bag with 7 ounces of 850+ down. I need a winter top quilt but can't afford one right now. I can afford the 5 ounces of down that could be added to the baffles. Problem is, I don't have a sewing machine. So my question is two fold,

1.) Is there any reason adding down to the baffels won't work to make this a 20-30 degree quilt?

2.) Is anyone up the challenge of doing the sewing for me?

I have lots of hiking and military gear that I could trade for your services.

I'm interested. Adding 2.1 oz will be a 30% overstuff. I'm not familiar with the bag you have but that amount of overstuff will gain you 20-25* or so. Is the down your adding the same as whats in the bag?

Could you send me a picture? I sure we can work out a trade.

I'm interested in adding down to 10 baffles starting right below the RAB logo and stopping before the footbox (footbox has plenty of down). As I stated there is 7 ounces of 850+ and if I add 1/2 ounce to each chamber that would bring the quilt up to a total of 12 ounces which is approximately what all the cottage 20 degree top quilts use.

Ok - I get it now. Easy to do - You pay shipping both ways and now -- what do you have for trade? Any military (or other) winter gloves?

Adding more down to your quilt may make it warmer, but it might not make it a 20* bag. Down insulates by trapping air between the down clusters. Most quilt makers advertise a 20* rating for about 3.5" of loft, like Hamockgear's Burrow with 12 oz of down. Unless your bag has baffles and chambers sized for the down to loft to a full 3.5" you'll primarily be adding weight and not loft. The down has to have room to expand to it's maximum loft to acheive the maximum space between clusters, and thus it's greatest insulating ability. If the chambers end up being overstuffed to the point of not allowing the down to expand, then the maximum space between clusters will not be acheived, ending up with less insulating potential.

What's the rating on the bag as is? 30-40*? You could trade for a warmer TQ adding in some of your other items? It would be easier than sewing. Just a thought.

Sorry but no winter gloves right now, I do have lots of web gear, pouches, flashlights, alcohol stoves, misc. foul weather clothing. Let me know if you might be interested in any of it
