I have an old down/feather mummy bag I found for $7 at the local consignment store. I initially made a pea pod type setup like Shug shows by just pulling apart the zipper at the end and sewing some loops around the zipper to keep it from going any further. That was very warm, but I wanted the diagonal lay, so I chopped it down into an UQ. If your bag has a foot box setup, it will take more modification than mine needed since the zipper went all the way around like a rectangular bag. I would have kept it as-is if I could have had the diagonal lay. It is very warm!

That's a great idea! I'm going to hop on the phone tomorrow and see if any of the alteration shops will do this type of work. Don't know why I hadn't thought of it myself.

I'm wondering how this went, did you make the pod? UQ? Where's the pics?

You might also try a google search like this:
site:hammockforums.net use sleeping bag as uq

Out of curiosity I did exactly that - used it last night and after a few adjustments, it worked very well. I just added 4 small tabs for the suspension.
The bag still works as a sleeping bag. Boy, was it warm - especially for my feet. The bag enveloped the foot box on my WBBB nicely.
