    Misc. gear chest pack

I have been winter hiking for a few years and have decided that I want to add some sort of chest pack to my gear. Something fairly small that will be able to hold gear you want quick easy access to like gloves/mittens, hats, snack food, etc. Has anyone made something like this, and if so, what type of material did you use. I’m planning on heading to Joann’s for the fabric and don’t know if I’ll go with a canvas type material or try to cut the weight and use rip stop nylon. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This will also be my first real DIY project

I like Joe's and he does great work. But I would still like to see any plans for a DIY one.

A friend of mine has one and didnt like it. It was too hot on his chest. To be fait it was a summer hike so anything extra was not welcome.

Fair enough... I have thought about that as well... I had never heard of them until nutnfancy did a video on it... He raved about them, but he also operates in cooler climates than I do...

Regular ripstop should do just fine. I designed my water bladder holder to attach to my back panel as a front pack: it didn't work out quite as well as I'd hoped, but a smaller pack for snacks and a map and such should work just fine suspended from your load lifter straps.

Here's a good link to look at for it: http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/backpack_lid.shtml

That'll give you a good spot to start from...

Thanks for the links to the various sites. I like the look of the ribz pack. I was thinking more basic like the zpack but now...

Bergans of Norway made some front pockets made to be mounted on the shoulder straps. Being mounted to the backpack they help to distribute weight. But are not designed to be used separately, without a pack. They mount to the "D" ring on the straps.
They work very well for mittens, binoculars, small camera and snacks.

A regular chest rig gives less flexibility, when it comes to ventilation and accessibility of the jackets pockets. This design let's you open the jacket complete open in front, if necessary.

I'm on my iPad and have problems linking good images. Google "bergans frontlommer" or "bergans front pockets" for pictures
I have a pair and can probely take some detailed photos if you are interested.

My chest is occupied by my Simms chest pack most times. My trips are usually all centered around backcountry fly fishing these days.
