    MN>Finland State Forest>17-20 Jan 2013 - 2013 Minnesota Frozen Butt

Once again time for the 3rd Minnesota Frozen Butt. This years hang will be Jan 17-20. Site will be Finland State Forest. This will provide access to SHT, cross country skii trails, and dispersed camping within the state forest. Hang will be back to first years roots with no bailout warming tent or cabin. Last years temps dropped to a -19F. This is not a trip for first time winter camping or the place to first time test your gear. But, if your comfortable with your gear, skills and willing to join in the work it might be the trip for you and will be sure to give you bragging rights. Let the plans begin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jan 17-20 gets my first vote, but I can do either.

I like the idea of going to the forest.
There should be plenty of wood available. read "big fire"
Which will be the only available back up plan, All will have to help gather wood, read LOTS, and if someone gets cold they can stoke the fire until daylight.
These outings are a lot of fun, but do require a lot of work from everyone attending to make it enjoyable and safe for all

I agree with not a place to practice your skills. Practice in the back yard or close to home before attempting a full on winter camp.
Practice improves your skills, and confidence. Even if you have done a lot of cold weather camping.

I put together a sign up and other item spread sheet. First time I have done the Google Doc, so I hope it works.

I can make the weekend of the 17th too. Is there a specific location planned in the forest? What Tala and I will do is backpack in to your camp, stay for one night and then continue onward the next day solo to get in more trail time.

A couple of us from Ohio are planning to come, the 17th weekend would be great. We are trying to decide on whether to drive or fly. Can someone help us out with the best airport to fly into nearest to the hang location? Sure would appreciate it!

Duluth airport is the closest to Finland or you can fly into the cities.

I am new to HF, but not to winter camping in MN. I am looking forward to either dates, but the 17th is a little better.

I'm still in trouble for going to MN on Jan 20 last year... Smiling Face's birthday! (She was not smiling...)

But I will work on it, with Thing1's help.

I had the same thought, very tempting, both are a similar distance from me. Maybe should consider what others in Ohio are doing and see about a car pool.
