Ah, one thing that I forgot to mention.....The frozen lake is quite loud! The ice can shift in massive pieces and make for some very creepy night-time listening.

The lake also burps...it sounds very creepy also...like an animal woofing.

If we hadn't been told about that by some dayhikers we ran into, we probably would've been even more startled than we already were.

It's a beautiful area for sure, but actualy I want to go explore that area you went to recently, is it the Ouachita Wilderness? Looks nice and gentle compared to the Pecos!
San Pedro Wilderness area is outside Cuba. Rt. 550 north from ABQ, then take Rt. 126 east when you get to Cuba. Follow 126 E maybe 10 miles ? to FR 70 towards San Gregorio Lake until you hit the parking area for the trailhead. The trailhead is around 9200 ft and the trail heads north for about a 1500-2000 ft elevation gain but it's gradual and easy, peasy. No camping or fires in the lake zone, but after half mile onward past the lake, camp anywhere. It's a wilderness area, so no formal campsites, but plenty of creeks (Clear Creeek, Las Vacas, etc.) so plenty of water, which is unusual for NM....

Great pics with a matching story!

Glad to see both of you came out alright. Love the growing sounds of the ice on a lake!

    Thanks for sharing.

Yah I looked it up and it looks pretty nice, like you said...I think that might be a good place to take the family when they are ready...thanks!

It's really not that far either, especially since I'm over in Rio Rancho.
