Sounds good Latch! I'll keep this thread up to date ! If we decide to do the Rice Fields and you or anyone else is interested in driving up , I can give you directions! The Rice fields has two great shelters , one actually has a fireplace in it ! Hopefully the weather will cooperate? LOL!

Looking into TN from Round Bald at 0700 this morning....

...was around 22F with a pleasant breeze. Even at 0630 6 or 7 cars at Carvers. Saw some backpackers off in the distance and several other photographers.

    Forgot the NC side

Most times the NC side looks nicer.

Why not just rub it in as I look out over the scenic expanses....of my subdivision.

Wisenber, the hiking was good. Used microspikes for the ice. The drive back down to 19E was spooky and I followed the scraper truck and the spinning salt dispenser. Had a good view of Mt. Mitchell, Hawksbill, etc. Nice morning to be up there.
All this to say that most likely any group planning a winter foray in the Roan system your biggest and most dangerous challenge will be getting to and from Carvers Gap.

I've been looking at the Weather ! It looks like we will most likely be hitting the Rice Fields if this weather trend keeps up! I don't mind cold but 20* then 35 mph winds makes for some brisk sleeping weather!

From Carvers to 19E it's not the cold nor the wind. It's the possibility of white outs on the balds and the balds are extensive. It's a beatch when you have no idea where the trail is.

A tarp will do wonders to dispel that. When we were there two years ago, the sustained winds were above that, and the gusts were in the 60 mph neighborhood. Site selection overcomes most of that. A good hedge, rock or berm will block much more than you'd think.

Amen! I can sleep fine. Having ice blown in your face at 35 mph will sting, and it doesn't help with vision.
