    Modified Elephant Trunk

Inspired by This Video and This Thread I modified a set of Elephant Trunks. I'm a big fan of the ET's but like I said in the video they are a little time consuming to adjust especially if you hook directly to your hammock and don't use whoopies. I've only recently started using whoopies and my wife still doesn't... Anywho, it seems to be very secure. I didn't try to use a trail stick to see how it would hold up in place of the bar. The aluminum bar is just a tent peg cut in half.

I would also like to apologize for the focus and framing on some of the video, its a new camera and my first time making a video with it. Please bear with me as I work thru these technical difficulties.

    Good luck,
    RED

Pretty neat set-up there, Red. I guess one thing that I noticed was that the ET would no longer be on the strap so there might be a great chance of losing it. But I sure could see where it would be lots quicker to adjust.

    Nice Idea. I like it!

I wonder about sewing the ET into a loop at the end of the webbing with the remaining bar. One could still make the loop and double it through. Better yet put the webbing through and then fold over and sew the webbing so it cannot come back. That does not invade the space where the double sloop goes through.
    YMMV

I'm a little worried about the loseability of these too, but there are options: leave them in place until the next hang, larks head them to the strap after removal from tree, if you use a biner on your straps clip them on the biner etc. etc. Haven't figured out just what I'll do yet?

I'll have to mock that up and see what happens, the problem is that I have a couple different sets of straps so I don't really want them permanently installed. Its still a work in progress.

I just wonder how much of the stregnth is lost by this MOD
The forces at work are changed considerably with this MOD

I would think it will be OK ,but just wondering if the maker would have in-sight on the derating

I love my ET's and I have the same issue I just went to Whoopies and it is a little hard to make adjustments to my straps also, but I would like to see more testing and an answer from the maker before I will MOD mine

I like it. I use whoopies with my elephant trunks, so adjustability is less of an issue for me. I agree, though, that the ladder lock is tight and a bit tough to move (even with normal straps). Thanks for sharing!

Believe me I got in the hammock rather gingerly before I started bouncing a bit. I didn't do any math or calculate the forces etc., nothing scientific, just a "fingers crossed, hope for the best" sort of test. I'm hoping Bloomgorge will see this and chime in.

Thanks breyman, I agree, my wife's straps are thinner than mine and tho' they are easier to adjust it's not without effort. Which is good from a security point of view.
