The snow was what we all wanted and by golly we got it.
I think that orange mug could be WV's. He gave me one like it a year ago.

I had a great time also! I did not get to spend as much time at the fire meeting folks Saturday as I wanted too. My buddy Elijah and I went off on a hike 10am and didn't get back till after 4... We hiked the whole loop from Massey Gap back up to Wise Shelter , then down the Wilson Creek trail and back to camp...about 5 miles in the snow not including the extra mileage we did when we got off track Also, I lost my phone on the hike while scurrying around in some Rodo's off trail but we went back out on Sunday and Found IT!! Anyway, I planned on getting back in time too cook up my onions and taters for the pot luck but we didn't make it in time I still cooked them and brought them up but I suppose everyone was already full cause no-one ate em. Oh well, I thought they were awesome, along with the few scraps leftover from the earlier grazers. All in all we had a great time and enjoyed being around fellow hangers in the snow and cold. Next time I hope to be around for the comradery more. Thanks to HamMike for the Woopies!

I saw those taters and onions setting there sunday morning and remember wishing they were warmed up. I'm sure they were awesome sorry I missed them.
Group hangs can be weird when you don't already know someone there. I'm content just to hang out and stare at the fire. Preciate the tyvek!

Great pictures and always a learning experience. I love Mt. Rogers and backpacked November, but NOTHING like your experience. What a bunch of tough guys and gals! Maybe next year....

Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing

Cold and wet can be more of a problem than just deep cold. Glad everyone came through OK.

Hope to see some pics of Hickery dancing with the ponies

Man reading these posts and seeing these pictures makes me really sad I missed out on this adventure. Well glad everyone had fun, stayed safe and here's to hoping I make it next year.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Great reports & pictures! Thanks guys!

I did find it funny that Dave (WV) said "I could see that Doctari and Bonsaihiker were struggling" Cause my thoughts on our time at the Wise was: "I could see that WV and Bonsaihiker were struggling" but I was the one that was fine, GREAT in fact, if a little cold (I WAS shivering). So MY take away message about hypothermia was & is: Use your hiking companion(s) as a mirror of sorts. If you have had the same conditions & similar gear, & they look like C**p, YOU DO TOO!! "Too bad that my companions are such a mess" means you are "a mess" too!

I so hated to leave, but it was the right thing to do, even if not an easy choice to make.

My camera stayed in it's pocket for the most part so no pictures from me. Sorry! I wish it was handy on the way home, cause when we were nearly to Damascus saw 2 guys suiting up to go INTO THE WATER IN KAYAKS!
Now I don't feel so crazy. THAT would have been a good picture.

Not for a moment was I having a bad time. Yea, sounds nuts, but I had a GREAT time both days!! One thing I wish: My hat had about 1.5" to 2" of snow on it when we got to the amphitheater, I took a picture, but it didn't keep in the camera. Sadly my camera does that every now & then.

I'm glad that all had fun! Will make more Scotch eggs for Friday of next year. Going to make a dozen with HOT sausage, just have to figure out how to mark them as such. The plan is to do 48 & maybe there will be left overs for Saturday too.

FYI: for those already planning on next year, the dates are Jan 17, 18 & 19 2014. Or, the 3rd weekend of January.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Doctari, I'm just glad you guys got out safe. But your adventure can be a learning experience for the rest of us.
It makes me wonder about things like, what kind of rain gear were you wearing & what caused you to get so wet during that hike.
Don't get me wrong. I know how much of a challenge it can be hiking in the rain. I'm just wondering what advice you guys would give someone that might find themselves hiking in those conditions.

A few possibilities that come to mind are... hiking slower to prevent overheating as well as ventilating rain gear & removing layers.
Removing layers is easyier said than done when it's raining though.
