I'll also edit this post and add in the bit on how a french seam can be helpful for attaching netting and a tent wall.

Edit...in case the picture on the right is confusing...the green line is supposed to be where you stitch the two patterns together and the while lines are to show where the pattern is drawn out on the sheet of fabric. Finally...the black line represents where the seam is...for tarps and hammocks this isn't all that helpful but for tents and packs or shirts it would be very helpful so that you don't have seams that are folded different directions (I once folded a flat-felled seam on one side of a tent door the wrong way before...so when I brought the doors together the seam didn't line up, nor did the bottom but that's an easier fix...that experience is why I do this now).
Thanks for the pics, they are a huge help. You know it's a good one when I stare for a few bits then "Oh, I See..."

    Whichever one is easier

Practice both and go with the one you find that works for you.

I'm making a diamond tarp from silnylon. my design is different from others in that I am not putting the seam at the ridge line. The seam will be halfway down the side. My question is... should the folded part of the seam (I'm using the hybrid version) be on the inside or the outside. If it is on the inside, it should likely be sewed against the uphill section so the rain does not filter into it... if on the outside, it should be rolled to the lower end so the rain will run over it. Any thoughts appreciated. obviously, it will be seam sealed.

Then it shouldn't really matter. I'd probably put it to the inside, just to make the outside smooth.

If you seam seal then water won't get inside either way...It still doesn't stop me from trying to be uniform and always put the fold on the inside. I just fine it to be a bit more aesthetically pleasing and lessens the potential for water to seep into the seam (again, shouldn't happen if sealed properly).

    Thanks for the responses.
i put the flap on the inside. worked out nice.

agree that a properly sealed seam will not seep, but Murphy has my number...
