Question Pole Mod vs Side Pull Outs - What Say You?

I'm looking for any and all opinions on the subject. I want to have all my ducks in a row, and my tarp pattern finalized before I make the first cut.

The tarp should be a winter tarp somewhere in the neighborhood of 11 x 10 or 11 x 12.

The Pole Mod would give me extra room without having extra lines for the kids to muck up, but with Side Pull Outs I have one less piece of equipment to keep track of.

    *sigh* Decisions, decisions...

    Whadda ya think?

I like the pole mod in my winter tarp...sheds snow mighty well.
Rest of the year pull outs if needed. I use cuben then.

You can use aluminum arrow pieces like I did. Or buy some aluminum tent poles of various lengths and sizes. Or some of the tarp makers here have some they sell. My arrow 3 piece is 48" wide and gives lots of room and you can leave them attached on the outside even when its in porch mode. I like them alittle better than tie outs as there is less tieouts to trip over or try and tie out. Lots of mods out there on pole mods since I did my first one spring of 2012 after I think AHE came out with theirs.

    i concur with Shug.
i prefer not to use my pull outs if i can help it.
i think pole mod sheds the weather, causes the least stress and makes a great porch.

but I like the idea of the center tarp pole... it is my plan with the Superfly i am ordering, the poles 2qzq suggest weight 4 oz and like is said above, no lines to trip over and you can do it from inside the tarp... but if your making it, why not add both and use whichever suits your trip... the total weight for 4 tie outs plus the pole pockets couldn't be an ounce and a half at most... seems prudent to me to put both in at the beginning...

Both...I put both on my DIY Winter Dream and have been happy. The pole mod is great but winds can make it rack from side to side if no pullout

recently went the center pole route - great for my huge superfly winter tarp in silny. actually, amazing. fewer lines, great with snow, and extremely stable.

i use cuben for 3S, and have one pull on each side -- just in case.

I am totally diggin' the Center Pole Porch. I have an old tent I planned on selling for next to nothing, but I do believe I'll re-purpose the tent poles for my tarp.

I've been trying to research adding Side Pull Outs, but there's SO MANY different ways to do it I'm at a loss on what's the most reliable method. I want to know when I add something to the tarp it's going to stay put and not compromise the structural integrity.

I'm looking at 70d 1.9 oz Double Ripstop for the tarp. If I use this can I "glue" a reinforcing piece/patch using this http://diyfunprojects.com/?tag=seam-sealing-basics or do I need to look into another adhesive or simply use 2-sided tape before stitching?

    OR

Should I forgo that entirely and purchase a set of clips? Though to be honest, I think those would stretch/warp the tarp if left on for an extended amount of time. Am I wrong on that?

    *minuscule freakout*

Usually finding answers to my questions is fairly easy, but you guys are so dang industrious and friggin' creative it makes it hard on a noob like me!

Instead of using the tie out to the ground why not the ole hiking pole across the ridgeline? Seems to me you get the best of a pole mod without the weight or the guy lines to trip over.

I recently switched from Side pull-outs to SGT Rock's Pole Mod. I love it and do not plan on going back. More room and the only extra piece of gear? A 12" long piece of PEX tubing that can be used at springs along the trail that do not have a pipe.
