    3 oz of down enough?

OK. Hammock done. Suspension done. On to the underquilt. My two biggest objectives for my DIY hammock system are cost and weight (in that order). I really would like to do a down UQ because of the weight savings. I saw that thru-hiker sells 900 fill down for $30 per 3oz. I really want to make it work with the 3 oz of down because I don't want to spend an extra $30. I am only making a torso sized UQ (I am thinking 42" x 46") for summer and shoulder seasons, something in the range of 45 to 50 degrees. How much loft should I expect out of 3 oz? Will it get me to that temperature range, or should I bite the bullet and get 6 oz? Also, is the Nobul1 a suitable fabric for the UQ? Thanks again.

Wilderness Logic sells 850+ down by the ounce...this way you can choose to get 4 or 5 ounces if you want...also their price is less...

3oz of 850 down should give you about 1" max loft in a quilt that size. 45-50 degrees is a good rating.
in my Breeze, the finished baffled area is 40x50, and i use 4oz of down to get a 40 rating.

+1 on Wilderness Logics for buying down. Got some from them before Christmas and was very happy with it.

If I read that right, Wilderness Logics will package the down in 1/2 oz containers? That would be insanely convenient, I will just size the baffles for 1/2 oz each. Thanks for the link.

They certainly do the 1/2 packs and Marty is fantastic to deal with!

when it comes DOWN to it. either place will be good. before shipping you are looking at a cost of 0.011 per cubic 1 from Thru-hiker and 0.007 (rounds up to 0.01) from Wilderness Logics. So really it comes DOWN to shipping costs for the DOWN. Hope this helps muddy the waters Don't forget to post pictures and all

+1. Just make sure you request 1/2 ounce packets. They come default in 1 ounce, so you'll need to make sure to request the change.

Since te-wa uses 3 ounces of 850 down for his 45-50 degree quilts, you should be good with either Wilderness Logics or Thru-hiker. Thru-hiker's down is 900 fill though so should give you more loft and be slightly warmer for the weight
